Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-Colored Fillings

As the name suggests, a tooth-colored filling is designed to match the color of your tooth. Most patients prefer tooth-colored fillings to those metal amalgam, silver or gold fillings that they consider unsightly and unattractive when they smile.

Also known as composite fillings, tooth-colored fillings are dental restorations designed to be inconspicuous and natural in appearance. They blend well with your teeth and appear far more natural than metal amalgam fillings, which are much darker and more easily noticed by other people when you smile. Patients with tooth-colored fillings believe they improve their smile aesthetics, self-confidence, and sense of well-being.

Tooth colored fillings are comprised of plastic, silica, and glass particles. These substances combine to replicate the qualities of natural tooth structure like translucency and resistance to wear. The blend of these particles results in a rigid composite that strengthens the teeth and enhances smile aesthetics. The material used is soft when it is initially placed. This allows Dr. Johnson to make sure that it completely fills the cavity. Once the filling material is in place, it is hardened with a special light that bonds the composite resin to the tooth.
